Grading/ Report Cards

Grading Policy

In order to keep you better informed about your child's progress, I am grading papers using the 4,3,2,1 system that is found on the Parent Report Card Rubric.

4-Understandings beyond grade level expectations * (above 100%)
3-Exhibits mastery of grade level skill/concept (86 – 100%)
2-With minimal guidance (60-85%)
1-With direct guidance (59% or below)

**  exceeding expectations
√+ good but could be improved
√  below expectations

*Please note that not every classroom assignment will have the opportunity to
display a score of a 4. However, there will be plenty of chances for me to
observe "beyond grade level expectations" as we begin problem solving through
the content areas and conversing in Reader's/Writer's Workshop conferences.

Papers below a 60% or a grade of 1 will have the chance to be corrected or
redone in or out of class.  The new grade will be a maximum of a 2 or 60%.

This policy does not apply to district assessments/benchmarks.

Report Card Information

 Each category is scored 1-4.
   1-child exhibits skill/concept with direct guidance/assistance
2-child exhibits skill /concept with minimal guidance and increasing frequency
3- child exhibits mastery of skill/concept consistently  (needs NO guidance)
4- child exhibits understanding beyond grade level expectation

At the beginning of the year most children require at least some degree of guidance from the teacher on most skills/concepts so a score of 2 is reasonable to expect in areas where your child is progressing at a reasonable rate toward becoming independent by the end of the year. is a score that indicates your child is on-track to being successful with that skill/concept at the expected pace. By the end of the year we should see 2's growing into 3s and even 4s in some cases.

There may be some areas where a 1 is indicated if it is a skill /concept that your child is performing consistently with direct guidance from me. A 1 may also simply mean that the topic has just recently been introduced and they are not expected to be beyond that level yet.
If it is an area that was discussed in our conference as an area where growth is needed then this is a skill/concept that will require greater guidance from me and more practice at home.   For example-if your child is having difficulty reading 2nd grade level texts then you will see some 1's in the Reading section.
A few 1's are not an indicator or warning of grade-level failure. They are areas where more time and energy must be spent to help your child be successful by the end of the year.  If your teacher has any concerns about your child's performance then they have already contacted you about it.

There may be some areas where a child has consistently exhibited mastery of a 2nd grade skill and is beyond needing guidance. These areas will be scored with a 3. It is important to keep in mind that the child must be consistently exhibiting mastery of the skill in the classroom (without guidance) to get a 3.

To get a 4 in any skill or concept your child must be consistently exhibit understanding beyond the grade level expectation. The key words are "consistent" and "beyond."

Some areas on the report card may be blacked out. This is intentional because at this point in the year we have not had a chance to fully introduce, teach or assess these areas because they will be addressed in the future. For example the "fractions" area is blacked out because as a grade level the students have not yet had a chance to practice and demonstrate mastery or independence with these skills yet. As the year progresses, however, these skill will be practiced and assessed and will begin to appear as a 1, 2, 3, 4 on the report card.
